Hoover U5140-900 Tempo Widepath Bagged Upright Vacuum Immediately

I purchased this vacuum after reading reviews posted here. Most were positive (good buy for the $$). Two major flaws with this vacuum: 1) hose for attachments WAY too short. Can not vacuum more than 2 feet from vacuum without tipping it over. Very annoying. 2) the carpet height adjustment either does not work on my vacuum, or is of poor design. No real adjustment happening.
