I researched vacuum cleaners that could perform well on both carpet/rugs and hard flooring. This model got a premium review from Consumer Reports.

The vacuum propels itself forward more than I had expected - you will do very little pushing. It is a bit wider than I had expected too, covering more area.

I use it on area rugs and on travertine tile. It picks up better on the tile than ANY cordless vacuum we've used. (Including the shark.) It's not PERFECT around wall edges, but it has a handy crevice/edge tool connected to the canister that is easy to use.
