For the price of this product I would say it is just, ok. It vacuums just fine on carpet, not so good on floors. Also i would say that the location of where to wrap the cord is a little weird. This is a very good vacuum. Loads of power and not that noisy. It does tip over when the accessories are used. But that is good because the brush always spins.

The cord is a little short, but just put a heavy gauge extension cord on it, or rewire it with the long cord from your old vacuum.

You have to unscrew 4 screws to change the bag - be careful so as not to damage the plastic holes. This is my biggest concern. I will be looking to replace the screws with a quick-off connector from the hardware store. I will then epoxy the quick connector in and be done with it.

It cleans quite well against the wall.

I think this vacuum is a stripped down model, same basic layout and, most importantly, same strong 12 amp motor.

The vacuum has no discernible smell when running - good filtration. It is not self-propelled, but the brushes pull it along so that it is not heavy to use. I prefer a bag over bagless personally.

It works good on tile - I would say a rating 7 of 10 on tile cleaning.

Overall, a 5 star for the price. I would put it up against any vacuum in terms of vacuuming carpet. If the dirt is gone, how much better can it be?

I ordered mine because a local exchange raised their price from $67 (& no tax) to $89, so back to Amazon I went.

I got mine in under 2 weeks for around $68, (it's $67 currently) and even though it's a bit heavy, it's performance more than makes up for the heavy weigh before you turn it on.

Once you turn it on, even in the high setting, the brush digs into the carpet so well that it almost feels like a self-propelled version that Hoover used to make a few decades ago.

It has 6 openings in the brush all around 2" wide and I'm still amazed at the clean bag area as I have a dirt devil that has good suction too, but somehow the fine dust leaks out of the filter bag and into the bag shell (cover), so far, very little fine dust has leaked into the bag shell area, to me this means the bag is actually trapping all of the dirt, (well more than my dirt devil) and because it has an adjustable brush height, it doesn't loose suction like my auto surface adjustment dirt devil does.

The cord wraps sort of different than my old hoover, but the cleanliness of the inside and outside make up for this strange new layout.

It has one attachment that doesn't always stay in it's spot on the back of the vacuum, but it usually only comes off if you allow it to hit the floor too hard, it takes bumping against the baseboard quite well, it doesn't feel like it's going to start falling apart.

My old Hoover used only one screw to hold the handle assembly in place for the final assembly, the Tempo has 2, I think this will pay off in allowing it to withstand more long-term vibration without the screw coming loose prematurely.

The accessory hose is easy to use as long as you have the power cord fully payed out from the wraping posts, otherwise you'll have to do that first to avoid tangling the cord and hose.

One last observation: I really like the fact that my vacuuming time is much shorter as I don't have to re-sweep an area several times before the dirt is sucked up, that alone makes this worth the trouble lugging it around when the power is off, and contrary to some other reviews, some of my other vacuums require hearing muffs, (like my dirt devil), this Tempo isn't that loud compared to my old Hoover, which cost me twice as much to buy back in the 90's and the only thing I use it for is vacuuming a rug we have in the garage in front of the washer/dryer, I have to use hearing protection using this old hoover because if it wasn't for my wife breaking the motor mount on one side by banging it down too hard, I would have had to toss it if i wasn't able to jury-rig a motor mount for the broken side.

Anyway, I fail to see why some of the past reviews thought the Tempo was too loud, (although I did notice that if you don't fully seat the vacuum bag cover and you try to use it with the cover prongs seated in the first
indentation on the bottom, instead of the 2nd area closest to the bag, it will make a noticable hissing sound from the air leaking past the cover seal) to remedy this, make sure the cover prongs are placed into the larger of the 2 areas where the cover prongs will fit.

My bag is almost half-way filled and I still see little dust leakage inside the front cover.

One last note, the Tempo has a hardware seemingly permanent HEPA filter on the right of the bag area with the cover off, so far I don't see this as a problem as the air coming out of the filter smells really fresh unlike some vacuum where the Hepa filter is the first thing to clog up, especially on the bag-less type vacuums, for the money, the Tempo is the best all around performer, it has 2 easy to hold hand holds for using it on stairs, although I don't use it on bare floors, I imagine with the brush design, it might kick dirt around on a bare floor, for that, an auto-floor adjusting vacuum like my dirt-devil might be a better suited for this specific task.Get more detail about Hoover U5140-900 Tempo Widepath Bagged Upright Vacuum.

This was the first vacuum I bought. I bought it years ago because the price was good and hoover was a known brand. I was happy with it but kept dreaming about buying an even better one when I had more money. Then we lost the vacuum in a flood. So after lots of research I decided to go ahead and upgrade and bought a $170 bagless bissel, which worked ok for the next month and then proceeded to almost drive me nuts (no suction, heavy, messy and the list goes on). After 2 years I gave up on it and bought another $70 hoover tempo. I am SO HAPPY with it. It's light, it does the job well, it's easy to keep clean. To me it is the best vacuum for the money. I did a TON of research about vacuums before I finally bought one. I'm so glad I did because it was well worth it! This is a very powerful vacuum and lightweight, considering how strong it is. I prefer bagged vacuums because I don't like dealing with opening the cans and having the dirt spill out all over the place. I purchased this vacuum about 6 months ago. It works great on stationary carpet. The motor provides good power to pick up dirt in as little as two passes. With respect to power, I have been very happy with the vacuum. But the powerful motor has been a mixed blessing because I can't use it loose on rugs. I didn't realize my filter back was too full and managed to break the rubber belt. But, it was easy to pick up a new belt at Home Depot and easy to replace the broken one. I bought this vacuum to replace a Eureka vacuum that I have had for 1 year and has failed at every step of the way. I paid three times as much for the fancy modern looking Eureka vacuum (what a fool). Now, one year latter, the Eureka vacuum has fallen apart and is out with this week's trash.

Now, to perfection!

I bought this Hoover vacuum out of spite. I was sick and tired of overpaying for vacuums when almost every other year I had to replace them. This little blue ugly guy surprised me the minute I took it out of the box.

For starters, it is virtually weight less. I could probably tip it over just by sneezing on it. So it's a God send every time I have to go up and down the stairs with it. Plus, I have to vacumm 4,000 square feet of house! So a light weight vacuum is a plus and this little ugly blue vacuum is a huge plus. So lite it turns on a dime!

It is also quiet which is nice because my three cats don't mind this vacuum at all. It's a bit noisy on bare floors but no big deal. It works beautifully on my wood floors so the noise is not an issue.

But what I am really in love with is the bag concept. I no longer have to empty out the disgusting cannister and get all that dirt I never wanted in the first place flying all over the kitchen. I complained to Eureka once about the cannister mess and they told me to empty the cannister outside! For sure! Perhaps if I was a cave man! But with my little blue ugly vacuum from Hoover I just take the bag off and toss all that filth in the garbage. No filters to wash by hand...nothing! Just toss and go!

Also, this is one powerful vacuum. It leaves my carpets looking like they were just steam cleaned. The brush is perfect and the suction gets all the dirt. I still steam clean my carpets once a month but in between, this little ugly vacuum does the rest and it does it well.

It is not the fanciest vacuum you will ever own. But function trumps over design with this Hoover. It is simple, yet effective. This was a value at $68. I too read all the reviews before making a purchase. I agree with critics who site loudness, belt breakage and short hose as issues. 1) This is the loudest vacuum I've ever heard. However, for the price, I can live with it. 2). Belt breaks every single time I accidentally suck up a sock or the corner of a rug. Again, for the value, I'm willing to replace the belt every so often. It is not hard and belts are about $1.50 each. 3). The hose is the part that pisses me off. It is so short that in order to do the ceiling corners, I have to lift it off the ground with one hand and vacuum with the other. Also, the connector at the base of the vacuum to the hose is ridiculous. Get some duct tape out and affix the hose, or else you will be popping that thing off all the time. Also, the attachments do not stay attached to the machine. I keep mine on the closet shelf.

I would buy this again. The price can't be beat and for that price, I could afford a vacuum for all three levels of our house. The value goes beyond the price in that the machine really picks up well. It really SUCKS! And in the case of your vacuum, that's a good thing.

After reading the reviews in Consumer Reports & Amazon, I decided to give this Vac a try since my more expensive Hoover Wind Tunnel decided to go to an early grave. It arrived yesterday and with great anticipation of being able to almost suck up the carpet, I attached the handle, screwed it on and was ready to go! I made sure there was a bag in the vac and noticed it had a tear in it. Well, jeez....ok, no problem...a little duct tape and voila! So, I get it set up in my front room, turn it on and WOW! It really does have powerful suction! Not more than 5 minutes into my whole house cleaning frenzy, the brush stops spinning. WHAT???? So I took it apart and sure enough, the belt was snapped in half. Not good. Guess I didn't want to clean anyway. Today, I got a package of belts, installed it and the cleaning frenzy began. The old belt may have been defective but the vac sure isn't. Yes, it is loud and it has no whistles and bells but I got it to suck up dog hair and it is doing just that. It doesn't weigh very much either. I can carry it up my staircase with one hand. Do I recommend this vac? Sure do. For the price, it can't be beat. Also, be sure to get some Y Vac bags since this only comes with one and I guess it wouldn't hurt to get some extra belts as well. I absolutely LOVE this sweeper. I even sweep for no reason. I have 2 BIG dogs. Lots of dog hair. It takes it right up and makes the rugs look great!I Don't find it too noisy. I purchased this vacuum as we had moved house and our old vacuum had breathed it last the day we moved out. However being slightly short on cash I couldn't get the one I wanted and decided that this looked like the best option for the price. I have in the past had bag-less vacuums and wasn't looking forward to having a bag again. However after a month of owning this vacuum I cannot believe I even thought about spending more money. I have found it very powerful and having new carpet we have had huge amounts of fluff floating around as well as the fact we have a long haired cat. I have had to change the bag once and have found it very easy to do. I cannot recommend this vacuum enough, for the price it is a complete steal in my eyes. It is quick and easy to handle and although it is not the lightest vacuum on the market I haven't found it too hard to carry up my stairs. I has performed great on my bare floors and my carpets. Take the $68 you were going to spend on this Hoover product, and walk over to the toilet and flush it down the drain. This is by the far worst product I have ever bought on Amazon. I have had it repaired twice at Hoover store, no warranty coverage even though it was under warranty, fine print said it was not a warranty repair, each repair was $25, so now I am up over $100 for this piece of crap! The belt will not stay on it for over 5 minutes without slipping off. You then have to use a screwdriver to take off 4 screws to get the bottom cover off to put the belt back on, only to have it slip off again 5 minutes later. I finally got more pleasure out of taking it out to the driveway and smashing into as many pieces as I could to dispose it in the garbage can. Hoover is a joke and this vacuum is a joke! DO NOT BUY A HOOVER PRODUCT as they will not warranty it and it is junk! I can't tell you how disappointed I am with this product. The first time I used the Hoover, it worked like a dream. My carpet looked almost brand new! I was so impressed and very grateful for all of the positive reviews that encouraged me to take a chance on this affordable product.

Well, my attitude changed after I noticed that after only 4 uses, the vacuum stopped sucking up the dirt and debris. My change bag light was not lite, but I decided to replace the bag anyway. All of the dust and dirt continued to get caked up inside the vaccum cleaner and NO dirt was being filtered into the new bag.

I am very disappointed. Now I'm going to have to spend the money to have this shipped back to the Hoover for a replacement.

This vacuum got a great review on consumer reports, and was considered a best buy for the price. It really does a good job, and is a lot more powerful than I thought it would be. It's not heavy, it's easy to manuver, and all of the attachments are convenient. The only negative thing I would say is that the bags fill up fairly quickly, so make sure to change them often because if you don't it will not work properly. My sister also has this vacuum and after about 1yr we had to replace the belt that that turns the brush thing at the bottom. However, it only cost about $2 and it was really easy to replace ourselves. So, overall I would definitely say this is the best vacuum you can purchase for the price. I purchased this vacuum in February 2009. The belt broke on its third use. Replaced that. It has always seemed to spit out dirt. While vacuuming today, the cord somehow came in contact with the roller bar, and the brush roller stripped the insulation off, leaving the electrical wiring inside the cord exposed. Luckily, I unplugged the vacuum before examining the problem. If I had just touched the wires, I could have been electrocuted. This is a huge design flaw. The bag is on the small side and the unit is noisy.
Pros:

i just need to share this! i HATE vacuum cleaners. i've bought too many promises and been sorely disappointed and spent too much money on crappy machines. my VAX pooped out after ONE HOUR of vacuuming, when the HEPA filter clogged forever with the fine clay dust i live with. despite having sworn never to buy another hoover in the '80s, when the hoover i had then kept eating belts and making noise and doing a lousy job , i thought i'd give the Widepath a chance, since it was only $70 and free shipping and great reviews (dyson hasn't convinced me...i think my VAX experience has turned me against bagless and HEPA filters forever).
